OK so I have a confession to make. Never thought it would happen to me when I helped to build the Secret SMS Replicator as a developer at DLP Mobile. We had made the app as much as a gag, one day simply thinking, "wouldn't it be funny if.." We had no idea it would get the worldwide press it would get, and the controversy that it would create. We had no idea that it would catch the attention of Google itself. But what I really had no idea what that we built such a good app that my girlfriend would use it on ME and I would get caught by using the app I built to monitor my text messages without me knowing. How embarrassing. How ironic.
Things turned out okay in the end, but the office all had a great laugh at my expense, considering I was the one who originally came up with the idea for Secret SMS replicator..before I started dating my present girlfriend.
As you all remember, the Secret SMS Replicator, once installed on a phone, silently and secretly monitors all incoming text messages by BCCing your texts to the phone of the spy.
Last week, I decided to test the latest version of Reveal, the app which can detect and delete Secret SMS Replicator. When I ran the app, it warned me that Secret SMS Replicator had been installed and was running on my phone. I thought there was some sort of mistake, so I ran the app again and got the same answer. Confused, I used Reveal to delete the Secret SMS Replicator from my phone and went home, curious how this might have happened.
I walked into my apartment to be greeted by my girlfriend.
"How was dinner with your sister yesterday?" she asked. I had told her I was going to eat with my sister when instead I went over to my friends to watch the basketball game. Yikes.
"Um, good," I could barely respond.
She smiled, "and how was the game?"
Busted! I had to laugh too. She explained she put Secret SMS Replicator on my phone just because she was bored. I felt a little betrayed that she didn't trust me, but we talked about it actually turned into a pretty constructive conversation about boundaries, trust, and why I felt I had to lie to her about watching a basketball game with my buddy.
In the end, it all worked out for the best and think we are better off because of it. I thought I would share this anecdote with everyone because we all thought it was hilarious. Thankfully I wasn't doing anything too bad.
